More than 80 percent of Romania’s population belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church. Religion is an integral part of daily life for the majority of Romanians, and evidence of a rich spiritual tradition is widely apparent. These images explore some of the religious symbols that dominate the landscape of Bucovina.
In Romania’s northern province of Bucovina, the growing influence of modernization clashes with the starkly traditional agricultural lifestyle still practiced by many villagers. As the region becomes increasingly connected with the rest of the country and the world, some of its residents are turning to tourism as a means of supplementing their income. But as outsiders move in, a rugged and elegant way of life that has been passed from generation to generation could be threatened.
